Overseas Study Scholarships |
When I arrived in Amherst, a small town in rural New England which is home to the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts (UMass), I honestly had no idea what to expect. In hindsight I can safely say that the four months I spent studying abroad in the USA as part of my University of Queensland (UQ) Bachelor of Commerce/Economics dual degree was the most challenging, rewarding, and incredible experience of my life.
I was fortunate enough to take courses at the reputable Isenberg School of Management. Classes were taught in a very interactive manner and were based heavily upon case studies focused on domestic issues. This allowed me to gain a unique insight into, and develop a deeper understanding of, the world’s foremost economic superpower. During the semester the CFO of Eastman Kodak and UMass alumni John McMullen visited my Bank Management class to offer insightful advice on success in our chosen field. I was also present when the Chairwoman of the US Federal Reserve Janet Yellen gave a speech on campus about monetary policy and the current state of the world economy.
In order to fully immerse myself in the college experience I decided to join the rugby team. The style of rugby played in the states is definitely different to that which is played in Australia. However, it wasn’t too hard to adjust and away games gave me the perfect opportunity to explore the east coast of America with a group of boys who are now lifelong friends. I was impressed by the commitment shown by everyone involved with the team to growing the game domestically, and in a testament to our hard work the season culminated in a victory at the American Collegiate Rugby Championship Bowl Series in Charlotte, North Carolina. Being warmly embraced by the immense brotherhood of the UMass Minutemen Rugby team was a surreal experience, and it reminded me of my days representing the blue and grey at Churchie.
Upon reflection, I am immensely grateful to Churchie for fostering in me an everlasting mindset to strive for knowledge and personal growth. I am thankful to the Churchie Foundation for assisting me in undertaking this life changing adventure. Throughout my time living abroad in an unfamiliar environment I have refined a unique skillset which has allowed me to further develop academically, socially, and personally.
